"The world of the imagination is vital. I'm inspired right now by an
area that exists as a kind of international, cross-cultural explosion. What
began for me in Tokyo around 2000 with Pizzicato Five, Shonen Knife, advertising
and comics, and making music, photography and films, has evolved into a fascination
with the world of design, graphic novels, animation, painting, filmmaking,
and design/sculpture Art. This is a place without borders, where aesthetics
and playfulness meet. I love to create in that sandbox as a writer and artist,
make things, and to celebrate this global tribe of merry-makers. At the center
of it all is Japan. My relationship with Japan has evolved, like others in
my generation, from 60s animation (Astro Boy, Gigantor, Marine Boy, Speed
Racer), to Anthropology/Sociology/Japanese Studies in the late 70s/early 80s
(Frederik Schodt, Donald Richie), to a personal connection living in northern
Japan in a small community for four years. The humanity, humor, and history
of Japan collide in the Arts and it's exciting to see these ideas and aesthetics
continue to inspire people around the world."
